Looking to Iran to cure Delta's health blues

Baptist Town, Mississippi is the home of blues—and one of the poorest communities in America. In Mississippi, infant mortality rates reach third-world levels, life expectancy is far lower for blacks than whites and more than 20% of the population doesn't have health insurance. Which is why Doctors Aaron Shirley and Mohammad Shahbazi have looked to an unlikely model to cure the Delta's health blues—Iran's rural health houses. RT's Kaelyn Forde takes a look inside the plan to build health houses, staff them with welfare recipients and improve community health in Mississippi one house at a time.

Cathy and Kathy the kids in the hall

season 2 ep 10 Cathy and Kathy Bruce McCulloch and Scott Thompson played Kathy and Cathy respectively, two secretaries at the firm AT & Love (a play on AT&T and TKitH's catch-all business). These sketches parodied the banality of office life, from guessing the sexuality of the new guy to dealing with a slutty temp. Occasionally, sketches also included Kevin McDonald as another coworker, and Dave Foley as their boss Elizabeth. In the middle of the third season, the temp, Tanya (played by Mark McKinney), finished her term of employment and left the office amidst mock tearfulness from her coworkers. The character of Kathy appeared independently of Cathy in the first season, where it was revealed that she once dated a blues singer named Mississippi Gary. A photograph of Mississippi Gary can always be found posted on the wall of her cubicle in later appearances. Mississippi Gary (who was played by McKinney) would go on to become a recurring character in his own right, though his subsequent appearances would neither include nor refer to Kathy. Based on both his name, and his style of speech, some believe that the character is a parody of the blues guitarist Mississippi Fred McDowell.

Muddy Waters - Going Down Slow - ChicagoFest 1981

gravityworld.tv In August of 1981, when the undisputed king of Chicago blues headlined ChicagoFest — then the Windy City's top outdoor music festival — for two nights, his loyal subjects mobbed Navy Pier on the lakefront to hear one of the greatest innovators the idiom had ever produced. Muddy Waters led the charge in the late 1940s and early '50s to electrify Delta blues in an urban setting. His peerless combo would include such future stars as ace guitarist Jimmy Rogers, harmonica virtuoso Little Walter and piano wizard Otis Spann. But Muddy was always at the center of the action. His gruff, authoritative vocal delivery and slashing slide guitar define the purest form of postwar Chicago blues. Waters' charisma was as immense as his musical vision. Born April 4, 1915, in Issaquena County, Mississippi, McKinley Morganfield learned the blues while sharecropping on Stovall Plantation. One guitarist particularly influenced him. "I never seen a man could play at that time as good as Son House, to me. With that big voice he had, he could sing," said Muddy. "He was preachin' the blues then, and I thought he was the best in the world." In late August of 1941 musicologists Alan Lomax and John Work rolled into Coahoma County in search of rural gospel and blues talent. They made field recordings of Muddy, with Lomax returning the next year to cut more. But those were for the Library of Congress. It was only after Muddy migrated north in 1943 that he pursued a career as a ...

Carmen Miranda on The Jimmy Durante Show (1955) - Her last performance - Part 2/2

Follow me on twitter: twitter.com :D On August 4, 1955, Miranda suffered a heart attack during a segment of the live The Jimmy Durante Show, although she did not realize it. After completing a dance number, she unknowingly suffered a mild heart attack, and nearly collapsed. She quickly pulled herself together and finished the show. At the end of the broadcast, she smiled and waved, then exited the stage. She died later that night after suffering a second heart attack at her home. en.wikipedia.org

Meet John Doe: Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Walter Brennan, Gene Lockhart (1941 Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Meet John Doe is a 1941 comedy drama film directed and produced by Frank Capra and starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. The film, about a "grassroots" political campaign, created unwittingly by a newspaper columnist and pursued by a wealthy businessman, became a box office hit and was nominated for an Academy Award for best original story (for Richard Connell and Robert Presnell Sr.). Though the film is less well known than other Capra classics, it remains highly regarded today. It was ranked #49 in AFI's 100 Years... 100 Cheers. The film is now in the public domain. Infuriated at being told to write one final column after being laid off from her newspaper job, Ann Mitchell (Barbara Stanwyck) prints a letter from a fictional unemployed "John Doe," threatening suicide on Christmas Eve in protest of society's ills. When the note causes a sensation and the paper's competition suspects a fraud and starts to investigate, the newspaper editor rehires Mitchell who comes up with a scheme of hiding the fictional nature of "John Doe" while exploiting the sensation caused by the fake letter to boost the newspaper's sales, for which she demands a bonus equal to 8 months' pay. After reviewing a number of derelicts who have shown up at the paper claiming to have penned the original suicide letter, Mitchell and editor Henry Connell (James Gleason) hire John Willoughby (Gary Cooper), a former baseball player and tramp who is in need of money ...

Erma Franklin - I Get The Sweetest Feeling

I was amazed and delighted that we got someone as prestigious and legendary as Erma Franklin to participate in The Strange World Of Northern Soul, performing her much rarer version of this monster Jackie Wilson Northern Soul crossover classic, thanks, mainly, to Pat Lewis being her close friend. And gutted then when she died in 2002, so full of life and so articulate and talented. What a terrible waste. Erma was born in Shelby, Mississippi in 1939. When she was six, they moved to Detroit, where her father became the minister of New Bethel Baptist Church. After High School, Erma toured the country for two years in her father's gospel group. Continuing with her studies, Erma met up with a young Berry Gordy, who as we know today would form the legendary Motown label. Erma recalled how they went to Chicago to do some things with Chess "and we hardly had two bits between us." At Chess, they met up with producer Billy Davis but nothing came of it except being an inspiration for a huge hit later for Etta James called "All I Could Do Was Cry." Erma was all set to join Motown and would have recorded many of the early songs later sung by Marv Johnson and Mary Wells but, Rev. Franklin prevented it. "I couldn't very well argue with my father when he said it was a choice between leaving home and singing or staying at home and studying - so I decided to stay at home and study!" During this time younger sister Aretha was signed to a recording contract from Columbia records. Fortunately ...
