The Help Movie Review

Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter (Emma Stone) is a southern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends and family's lives, along with an entire Mississippi town, upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. Aibileen (Viola Davis), Skeeter's best friend's (Bryce Dallas Howard) housekeeper, is the first to open up, to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter's life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories and as it turns out, they have a lot to say. Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges, but not before everyone in town has a thing or two to say themselves when they become unwittingly caught up in the changing times. Fun Fact- Bryce Dallas Howard played Gwen Stacy in the last Spiderman movie, Spiderman 3. Emma Stone will play Gwen Stacy in the next Spiderman movie, The Amazing Spiderman.

Houston-based Fast Cut Films, in association with Sunset Productions, is working on a documentary feature film, "Where Lightnin' Strikes," about the life and times of Houston blues legend Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins (1912-1982). His music inspired generations around the world from the Texas Gulf Coast, Mississippi delta to the British invasion. The enduring musical journey of Sam Lightnin' Hopkins began on a cotton farm in Centerville,Texas in 1912. He was drawn to the music he heard played by an older brother. After meeting up with Dallas bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson, Sam left the hardscrabble life of the Texas cotton fields, determined to play his way to better circumstances. Possessing a sharp wit and a unique ability for endless improvisation, Lightnin became a master storyteller. He was able to convey profound truths about the human condition via poetic imagery. The "Po' Lightnin" that inhabited his tales of struggle and misery became the "Everyman" that black audiences identified with and white audiences flocked to performances to experience.Whether playing on a street corner on Dowling Street or at Carnegie Hall his style defined Texas blues. He sounded like no one else yet influenced every one. His unique musical style influenced generations of blues, rock, country and soul musicians as well as filmmakers, writers and painters. Over the course of his 60-year career, Lightnin' Hopkins recorded more music than any other blues artist. His discography includes more than ...

Muddy Waters - You've Got To Love Her With A Feeling - ChicagoFest 1981

gravityworld.tv In August of 1981, when the undisputed king of Chicago blues headlined ChicagoFest — then the Windy City's top outdoor music festival — for two nights, his loyal subjects mobbed Navy Pier on the lakefront to hear one of the greatest innovators the idiom had ever produced. Muddy Waters led the charge in the late 1940s and early '50s to electrify Delta blues in an urban setting. His peerless combo would include such future stars as ace guitarist Jimmy Rogers, harmonica virtuoso Little Walter and piano wizard Otis Spann. But Muddy was always at the center of the action. His gruff, authoritative vocal delivery and slashing slide guitar define the purest form of postwar Chicago blues. Waters' charisma was as immense as his musical vision. Born April 4, 1915, in Issaquena County, Mississippi, McKinley Morganfield learned the blues while sharecropping on Stovall Plantation. One guitarist particularly influenced him. "I never seen a man could play at that time as good as Son House, to me. With that big voice he had, he could sing," said Muddy. "He was preachin' the blues then, and I thought he was the best in the world." In late August of 1941 musicologists Alan Lomax and John Work rolled into Coahoma County in search of rural gospel and blues talent. They made field recordings of Muddy, with Lomax returning the next year to cut more. But those were for the Library of Congress. It was only after Muddy migrated north in 1943 that he pursued a career as a ...
